1824 1824/2 Overdate

Every 1824 Capped Bust dime is an overdate. When the Philadelphia Mint resumed dime production for the new year, engravers pulled leftover 1822-dated working dies from storage and repunched the final digit with a 4, creating the 1824/2 variety, a coin where the underlying 2 still peeks out from beneath the 4 on well-struck examples. The Mint had used this same recycling shortcut on the 1823-dated coinage (also struck from repunched 1822 dies), and now repeated the practice a year later. There is no plain 1824 dime; the entire reported mintage of 510,000 carries the overdate. John Reich Collectors Society researchers identify just one die marriage for the year, catalogued as JR-1, which is the standard reference number used by collectors of early bust silver. Survival across all grades sits in the low thousands, and the issue earns Semi-Key status because uncirculated pieces almost never surface in the marketplace.

Authentication starts with the underdigit. On a genuine 1824/2, the loop of the 2 sits at a specific position relative to the 4, with traces of the curved upper stroke visible inside and to the left of the 4's upright; collectors verify suspect coins against published JR-1 die plates from the John Reich Collectors Society. An "overdate" is one date punched directly over another in the same die, and the "underdigit" is the older numeral showing through. Counterfeits, particularly cast copies pulled from genuine host coins, often show grainy or pebbled surfaces under magnification, soft rims where the original mold edge failed to fill, and underdigit details that look fuzzy or in the wrong location. Weight is a fast first check: the standard is 2.7 grams on .8924 fine silver, and a coin that reads materially light or heavy on a jeweler's scale needs deeper scrutiny. Slabs from PCGS and NGC, the two leading third-party grading services (TPG), explicitly attribute the variety as "1824/2 Overdate" on the label, and an MS designation (Mint State, meaning uncirculated) on this date is genuinely scarce and commands a heavy premium.

The piece measures 18.8 millimeters, the Large Type diameter Reich introduced in 1809 for this denomination, and carries a reeded edge that helped deter the clipping of precious metal from rims. Collectors building Capped Bust date sets cannot skip 1824, since it is the only option for the year, and a problem-free original example anchors the run as a true Semi-Key.
