About this coinHistory

The 1829 Curl Base 2 Capped Bust Dime takes its name from a tiny but unmistakable feature in the date: the bottom of the digit 2 finishes in a hooked, upward curl rather than a flat horizontal foot. That single curl is the entire variety. The cause traces back to the Philadelphia Mint's date logotype practice in the late 1820s. A date logotype is a small punch that carries all four digits of the year together, which the engraver impresses into the working die as a single unit. For dimes, the standard 1829 logotype used a flat-base 2. For Quarter Eagles (the $2.50 gold piece struck that same year), the standard logotype used a curl-base 2. At least one die for the 1829 dime was punched with the Quarter Eagle's date logotype by mistake, and the resulting working die produced coins with the wrong digit shape. Total mintage for all 1829 dimes was 770,000 pieces combined, and the Curl Base 2 represents only a fraction of that output, with surviving examples generally estimated in the low hundreds across all grades.

Authentication of the Curl Base 2 begins and ends with the digit 2 in the date. Under magnification, the base of the 2 must terminate in a clearly curled hook turning upward to the right, not a flat horizontal foot. Reference die plates published by the John Reich Collectors Society (JR, the specialist group that catalogues Capped Bust die marriages) show the exact curl profile and let collectors confirm an attribution against the established die pairings for the year. Weight should fall close to the 2.7 gram standard on .8924 fine silver planchets, and the diameter holds at 18.5 millimeters for the small-type Capped Bust dimes of this era. Cast counterfeits, which occasionally surface for early federal silver, show grainy or pebbled surface texture under a loupe and often miss the sharp reeding on the edge. Coins certified by Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS) or Numismatic Guaranty Company (NGC), the two largest third-party grading services (TPG, meaning the slab encapsulates the coin and assigns a numeric grade on the Sheldon scale, where Mint State or MS grades cover uncirculated coins from MS-60 through MS-70), carry the Curl Base 2 attribution directly on the insert label, which simplifies the buying decision for collectors who do not want to verify the date punch themselves.
