The 1830 Small 10C is the scarcer of the two regular reverse-size varieties struck for the year, distinguished by a more compact denomination punch in which the digits and the letter run noticeably shorter and narrower than on the companion Medium 10C. The Capped Bust dime, designed by John Reich, was produced in Philadelphia from dies prepared by hand, so subtle differences in punch size and placement gave rise to the die marriages that collectors track today. Mintage for 1830 totaled 510,000 pieces across all reverse varieties, with the Small 10C accounting for the minority share of that figure. Multiple JR die marriages, the reference numbers assigned by John Reich variety specialists, are recognized within the Small 10C subset, and each one carries its own population profile. Survival across the variety sits in the low thousands, with circulated examples in good to very fine condition turning up most often. Authentication begins with the reverse denomination itself. Measure the height and width of the numerals and the letter against a verified Medium 10C reference, since the Small variety reads visibly shorter top to bottom and tighter side to side. Weight should fall at 2.7 grams on a calibrated jewelers scale, and the diameter should measure 18.5 millimeters across the rim. Genuine pieces show crisp reeding along the edge with consistent tooth spacing, while cast counterfeits often display a grainy or pebbled surface texture, soft drapery folds on the obverse bust, and mushy stars rather than the sharp radial points seen on Mint product. Die marker confirmation through a published JR attribution guide provides the strongest authentication path, since each marriage carries documented cracks, clash marks, and date or letter positions that fakes rarely reproduce accurately. For high-value pieces, a slab from a major third-party grading service that explicitly notes the Small 10C designation removes most attribution risk.
