The combined 1834 mintage of 635,000 pieces, struck on John Reich's small-diameter format at Philadelphia, covers both varieties, with the Large 4 generally accepted as the more frequently encountered of the two when raw and slabbed examples are tracked across major auction archives. The variety arose from a die punch substitution part way through the production run, a routine occurrence in the early American minting era when single date digits were entered into working dies by hand using individual numeral punches. Several JR die marriages, the obverse and reverse die pairings catalogued by the John Reich Collectors Society, fall within the Large 4 grouping, and date-set collectors generally treat this variety as the standard 1834 entry while specialists pursue the marriages individually.
