About this coinHistory

The 1797 13 Stars Draped Bust dime captures a small but consequential administrative decision at the early Philadelphia Mint. Total dime mintage for 1797 reached only 25,261 pieces across all varieties, split between two distinct star arrangements on the obverse. Earlier 1797 production used 16 stars after Tennessee's June 1796 admission. Mint Director Elias Boudinot then ruled that adding a star for every new state was unsustainable and ordered a return to 13 stars, representing the original thirteen colonies. The 13 Stars variety reflects this reversion. Surviving examples are tightly held, since the combined output was already minuscule, and high-grade pieces are dramatically rarer than the raw mintage figure alone suggests at first glance.

Robert Scot's obverse continues the draped Liberty portrait derived from Gilbert Stuart's painting of Anne Willing Bingham, paired with the Small Eagle reverse used only on 1796-1797 dimes. The little eagle perches within an open wreath, surrounded by the legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. Authentication on this issue depends on the count and placement of the obverse stars, weight close to 2.70 grams, the 19 mm diameter, and the reeded edge. Collectors should also study denticles, the small toothlike beads circling the rim, since worn-down or filed denticles can indicate tooling or polishing. Reference the JR die marriages from the John Reich Collectors Society to match dies and rule out altered coins or contemporary counterfeits cleverly disguised today.

Demand from advanced type collectors and date specialists keeps the 1797 13 Stars expensive in every grade. Professional Coin Grading Service and Numismatic Guaranty Company populations remain thin, and recent Heritage Auctions appearances have shown strong realizations even for problem-free Fine and Very Fine examples. Collectors building a complete Draped Bust dime set should expect substantial competition for every grade level when high-quality pieces appear.
