About this coinHistory

San Francisco produced 27,330,000 Mercury Dimes in 1917, a solid output that ranked the branch mint second behind Philadelphia for the year. Wartime commerce on the West Coast drove heavy small-change demand, and the dimes circulated quickly through retail and transit channels in California and the broader Pacific region. The branch mint's die preparation that year was generally good, though strike pressure varied across the production run. Survival is strong in circulated grades, and Mint State examples surface regularly at major auctions. Roll hoarding was less aggressive on the West Coast than in the East, so true gems require patience to locate with full original luster.

Weinman's design carries through unchanged from the first year: winged Liberty on the obverse, fasces and olive branch on the reverse. The S mintmark sits to the left of the fasces base, and on this issue the punch is typically clean and well-positioned. Authentication concerns are mostly about surface originality and cleaning detection rather than added mintmarks. The Full Bands (FB) designation, awarded by PCGS and NGC when the two horizontal bands across the middle of the fasces are fully separated, is harder to achieve on this date than on the contemporary Philadelphia issue because San Francisco dies often went slightly soft in the central reverse. Look for crisp band separation on both the central and lower groups, and check for any retoned surfaces that suggest a previous dip.

The 1917-S is a fundamental component of any Mercury Dime date set and a good candidate for collectors looking to buy in Mint State without paying key-date prices. Heritage Auctions and Stack's Bowers offer gem FB examples on a regular cadence, and population reports show solid material through MS65 FB.
