San Francisco produced 8,850,000 Mercury Dimes in 1919, the lowest output among the three mints that year and one of the leaner figures of the early series. The branch mint was managing multiple denominations and the dime dies received standard rather than priority preparation. Coins flowed into West Coast commerce and saw heavy use through the 1920s. Circulated survivors are reasonably available, but Mint State coins are scarcer than the mintage might suggest because branch-mint hoarding was light and the saved rolls that did exist were often spent in subsequent economic downturns. The date has long been recognized as a conditional rarity in higher grades.
The S mintmark appears to the left of the fasces base. The punch on this issue is small and sometimes shows minor irregularities; authentication checks should confirm mintmark style consistent with the period and look for clean surface around the letter. Strike quality is the issue's defining conditional trait. Full Bands (FB) examples are extremely rare on the 1919-S because the central reverse routinely came up soft. PCGS and NGC award FB when the two horizontal bands across the middle of the fasces are fully separated, and on this date the qualifying gem population is small. Look at the central bands under angled light, check the wing detail on Liberty, and verify even luster across the cheek and fields. Pieces with crisp strike and original surfaces are a meaningful find.
Pricing accelerates aggressively through Mint State, with Full-Bands gems reaching levels that command serious attention at major sales. Heritage Auctions and Stack's Bowers have realized impressive results for top FB examples, and population reports underscore the rarity at MS66 FB and above. The date is a recognized series highlight for strike-focused collectors. The Mercury Dime series history covers these conditional benchmarks in more depth.
