About this coinHistory

San Francisco produced 4,770,000 dimes in 1927, a moderate branch-mint figure that mirrored Denver's output closely for the year. The coins entered Western circulation channels and saw steady use through the late 1920s and the Depression, leaving most surviving examples in Good through Very Fine grades. Mint State coins exist in respectable numbers thanks to scattered roll-quantity finds in the postwar decades, but high-grade preservation thins quickly above MS-64. Strike quality varied across the production, and a notable share of coins show softness at the central fasces or in Liberty's wing feathers. The 1927-S is not considered among the toughest Full Bands rarities of the series, but the date still rewards careful selection, and gem FB examples carry meaningful premiums over generic Mint State equivalents in the wholesale market.

The type continues unchanged from Adolph A. Weinman's 1916 design, with Liberty in a winged Phrygian cap on the obverse and the fasces with an olive branch on the reverse. Composition stays at 90 percent silver, 10 percent copper, 2.5 grams, 17.9 millimeters, with a reeded edge. The S mintmark sits on the reverse to the left of the fasces base. The Full Bands (FB) designation, recognized by Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS) and Numismatic Guaranty Company (NGC), requires complete separation across the two horizontal crossbands at the fasces center. Authentication priorities include inspection of the mintmark for tooling, weight verification at the 2.5-gram standard, and a check of the rims and reeded edge for irregular work that could indicate damage repair. Genuine fields show a fine die-flow grain at magnification with no polished appearance.

PCGS and NGC populations show MS-65 FB and above thinning meaningfully on the 1927-S, and Heritage Auctions plus Stack's Bowers Galleries have produced notable results at the high end. Read the full Mercury Dime series history.
