San Francisco struck 49,490,000 Mercury Dimes in 1944, a healthy wartime figure that supported continuing commercial activity across the West Coast. Defense industries, shipyards, and military bases all generated steady payroll demand, and dimes filled the practical role of paying for newspapers, coffee, and bus fares. These coins circulated heavily through the war and into the postwar decades, and original rolls preserved Mint State examples in adequate quantities for today's collectors. The 1944-S is among the more accessible San Francisco Mercury Dimes in high grade, with reasonably good strike quality and Full Bands examples available with modest searching.
The Weinman design from 1916 carries Liberty in her winged Phrygian cap on the obverse with LIBERTY around the rim and the date at the lower right of the truncation. The reverse displays the fasces with olive branch and the S mintmark to the left of the fasces base. The coin weighs 2.5 grams of 90% silver and 10% copper alloy, measures 17.9 mm in diameter, and has a reeded edge. The S punch on 1944-S coins is the standard knob-end style used at San Francisco in the late series, before the introduction of the smaller punch on a portion of 1945-S coinage. Authenticators verify the S shape and position, check the date for proper depth, and inspect the central horizontal bands on the fasces for the complete separation required for the PCGS or NGC Full Bands designation.
The 1944-S is affordable through MS-66 Full Bands and steps up at MS-67. Heritage Auctions has shown consistent demand for top-graded pieces. The date is a comfortable acquisition for collectors. Roll-quantity finds from estate consignments occasionally bring fresh material to the market, though such groups are increasingly uncommon. Original surfaces with consistent luster across the cheek, wing, and reverse fields are the strongest signal of long-term holding value. The Mercury Dime series history offers broader context.
