About this coinHistory

The 1840 No Drapery Seated Liberty Dime Proof is the last pre-Drapery proof entry in the series, struck at Philadelphia in single-digit quantity for the Mint Cabinet, dignitary presentations, and a small handful of standing collector requests rather than for any organized subscription. The 1,358,580 figure shown on this page is the year's circulation-strike delivery and has no bearing on the proof issue, which was struck independently from polished dies in deliveries the Mint did not separately tabulate before 1859. This coin captures Christian Gobrecht's design in its final pre-modification state: stars ring the obverse, but Liberty's elbow still lacks the drapery fold that Robert Ball Hughes would add in mid-1840 under Mint Director Patterson's instruction. The proof issue therefore predates the Hughes intervention and shares its obverse layout with the 1838 and 1839 proofs rather than with the Drapery dimes struck later in the same calendar year. Walter Breen's Encyclopedia of United States and Colonial Proof Coins places the surviving population at perhaps five to ten pieces, and the Sheldon rarity scale rates the issue R-7 to R-8.

Authentication of a candidate 1840 No Drapery dime proof rests on physical diagnostics rather than die-marker arguments alone. A genuine example shows deeply mirrored, watery fields with controlled die-polish lines visible under magnification, set against frosted devices on the earliest die states (the contrast diminishes on later impressions). Rims appear sharply squared and wire-edged on both faces, the product of multiple medal-press blows rather than the rolled rims of business strikes. Fully formed denticles, the tooth-like beads around the rim, should ring both sides crisply, with pinpoint star centrils, unbroken shield lines, and razor-crisp hair detail. Standard physical specifications must hold at 2.67 grams, 17.9 millimeters, .900 silver with a reeded edge. A defining attribution point is the open elbow itself: a coin offered as an 1840 proof must show the pre-Drapery obverse, not the Drapery layout that appears on later-year strikings. Because high-grade prooflike business strikes from this date can mimic the surface look without the structural rim and denticle signatures, PCGS or NGC encapsulation with documented provenance to a recognized 19th- or early-20th-century cabinet is functionally required for the coin to trade at proof prices.

For collectors, the 1840 No Drapery proof is a research and chronicle entry rather than a working acquisition target. Public appearances are separated by years, and realized prices reflect both the absolute scarcity and the historical weight of pre-1858 Philadelphia proof silver. The Regular classification on this page follows site convention for proof entries; the institutional-rarity story is carried by the prose and the census, not the badge. Specialists who pursue the complete 1837 through 1891 Philadelphia proof dime run treat the four pre-Drapery dates (1837 No Stars, 1838, 1839, and 1840 No Drapery) as the hardest inaugural cluster to assemble. For the broader story of Gobrecht's design, the early U.S. Mint proof program, and the series' production arc, see the Seated Liberty Dime series history.
