New Orleans struck 430,000 dimes in 1852, a modest output that placed the issue near the lower end of the branch mint's pre-Civil War dime production. The coin is the second-to-last New Orleans dime in the old 2.67 gram standard set by the Mint Act of January 18, 1837, with only the 1853-O Arrows issue following it before the design changed. Like its Philadelphia counterpart of the same year, this dime was struck during a period when silver bullion had quietly climbed above the face value of subsidiary coin, and contemporary New Orleans bankers and merchants were already pulling heavier silver out of commerce. The Coinage Act of February 21, 1853 arrived eight months later and shaved the dime weight down to 2.49 grams, sealing the 1852-O's status as the last full-weight New Orleans dime.
Survival reflects the era's bullion pressure. A material portion of the original mintage went straight to the melting pot once the weight reduction created a built-in premium on pre-Act silver, leaving present-day population thinner than the 430,000 figure would suggest. Strike quality on New Orleans dimes of this period tends to run softer than Philadelphia work, with weak stars in the upper-left quadrant and frequent mushiness on the shield's vertical lines and the wreath bow on the reverse. The mintmark, a small O, sits inside the wreath on the reverse, and a well-positioned, fully formed O is something to look for since the mark often shows light or partial impression on this date. Authentication should begin with confirming the absence of arrows at the date, the 2.67 gram weight on a properly calibrated scale, and a clear O mintmark beneath the wreath bow.
Most collectors encounter this issue in Very Good through Fine grades, where wear has softened both the typical strike weakness and any handling marks acquired in commerce. Extremely Fine and About Uncirculated examples climb steadily in price, and Mint State coins are genuinely condition-rare, with gems unusual at auction even after decades of focused branch mint collecting. The 1852-O reads as a respectable but not difficult date for a New Orleans set in circulated grades, and a much harder one for collectors targeting upper-tier preservation.
