About this coinHistory

The 1853-O Arrows dime is the New Orleans contribution to the first year of the reduced-weight Seated dime, produced under the Coinage Act of February 21, 1853 at the new 2.49 gram standard. New Orleans struck 1,100,000 pieces, a healthy figure for the branch mint and the only New Orleans dime in the Arrows era to break the seven-figure mark. No 1853-O dimes are known in the No Arrows old-weight format, which means every genuine 1853 from New Orleans carries the arrow flanks at the date and the post-Act weight. The dime did NOT receive the radial rays added to the 1853 quarter and half dollar, since the wreath reverse left no field behind a central eagle to ornament.

Strike on this issue runs typical for New Orleans work of the period, which is to say uneven across the obverse and softer on the reverse wreath than its Philadelphia counterpart. Liberty's head and the upper-left star ring often show light definition, and the wreath bow on the reverse frequently presents with mushy lower leaves where the dies pressed least efficiently. The O mintmark sits inside the wreath on the reverse, beneath the bow, and a fully formed strike of the mintmark is something to verify rather than assume on this date. Authentication hinges on three points: arrows flanking the 1853 date, the 2.49 gram reduced weight, and an unambiguous O mintmark under the wreath bow. Counterfeit risk is modest, but altered pieces, particularly mintmark removals from the more common 1853 Philadelphia issue, occasionally surface in raw form, which is why certified examples carry the typical preference.

Collecting interest is split between type buyers building the Arrows-at-Date subtype and date specialists chasing a New Orleans run of Seated dimes. The 1853-O is one of the more affordable Arrows-era dates in circulated grades, with Very Fine through Extremely Fine examples widely available and About Uncirculated coins requiring only modest patience. Mint State pieces are scarcer than the mintage implies and rarely come fully struck, making sharply detailed Mint State coins genuinely condition-rare. Auction prices for choice survivors have risen steadily as branch mint collecting has matured.
