New Orleans struck 1,770,000 Arrows dimes in 1854, the largest single-year dime output the branch mint produced during the entire Seated Liberty design. The figure represented an aggressive ramp from the 1853-O's 1,100,000 piece total, reflecting both demand for small change in the Lower Mississippi commercial system and the post-Coinage Act push to refill subsidiary silver inventory once melting pressure eased. The coin was struck at the 2.49 gram standard set by the Coinage Act of February 21, 1853, with arrows flanking the date as the visible weight-change marker. Like the 1853 dime, the 1854-O carries arrows alone with no rays around the eagle, since the wreath reverse left no place for the radial motif used on the higher denominations.
Strike characteristics on the 1854-O follow the New Orleans pattern: variable across the obverse, with star definition particularly uneven in the upper-left quadrant, and reverse softness on the lower wreath leaves and bow. Some die marriages show heavy clash marks where obverse and reverse impressions transferred during striking, and these are collectible in their own right among specialists. The O mintmark inside the wreath sits below the bow and can present with light or partial impression, particularly on later die states. Authentication points are arrows at the 1854 date, 2.49 gram reduced weight, and a clear O mintmark under the wreath bow. The premium over a Philadelphia 1854 is modest, so counterfeit alteration risk is correspondingly low, though the same caution about removed-mintmark fakes from the more common Philadelphia issue applies.
Collecting demand for the 1854-O is steady but unspectacular. Type collectors generally choose the easier-to-source Philadelphia 1853 or 1854 Arrows rather than the New Orleans branch issue, leaving the 1854-O as primarily a date-and-mint collector's coin. Circulated examples from Very Good through Extremely Fine are widely available at modest prices, About Uncirculated pieces are plentiful for the era and require only patience, and Mint State coins are condition-scarce. Fully struck Mint State examples, particularly with sharp head and shield detail, are genuinely difficult and trade at meaningful premiums over typical Mint State coins.
