1856 Small Date Proof

The 1856 Small Date proof dime is a pre-public-sales rarity and the first proof representative of the Stars No Arrows subtype that replaced the 1853 to 1855 Arrows design when the weight-notation arrows came off the dies at the end of 1855. The dime denomination did not receive Stars again on a fresh footing in 1856 (the stars had simply continued through the Arrows years), but the design as struck in 1856 returned to the clean pre-Arrows look at the new 2.49-gram standard, with two date logotype variations (Small Date and Large Date) recognized within the year. Proof work in this interval remained institutional rather than commercial, run from separately prepared dies and planchets on a medal press for officials, presentation, and standing collector requests. John Dannreuther's research on early proof coinage places original delivery on the order of fifteen to twenty pieces across both date logotypes for the year, with the Small Date subset the rarer of the two and modern census work documenting fewer than a dozen confirmed Small Date survivors. Authentication leans on two intersecting checks. First, the date logotype must read as Small Date, the variant with more compact date numerals and tighter spacing than the Large Date partner. Second, the design state must hold: no arrows flanking the date, the Stars With Drapery obverse, and the standard wreath reverse, paired with the post-Act 2.49-gram weight on a scale. Any candidate near the pre-1853 2.67-gram figure is disqualified outright. The surface diagnostics follow the pre-1858 proof template: deeply mirrored, watery fields with controlled die-polish lines under a 10x loupe (a jeweler's magnifier), fully squared rims raised perpendicular to the field rather than rolled, sharp denticles (the tooth-like beads ringing the rim) on both sides, pinpoint star centrils, unbroken shield lines, and razor-crisp head and drapery detail. Because the 1856 Philadelphia business strike ran in large volume from sometimes-polished dies, prooflike circulation pieces surface often enough that mirror depth alone is not sufficient. PCGS or NGC encapsulation with documented cabinet provenance is functionally required.

For collectors, the 1856 Small Date proof is a chronicle entry rather than an acquisition target. Public auction appearances are separated by years, and when an example surfaces it commands a five- to six-figure result driven by type-set builders chasing the Stars No Arrows subtype on the proof side and by Philadelphia proof dime specialists working the pre-1858 sequence.
