About this coinHistory

New Orleans struck 1,540,000 dimes in 1857, the third New Orleans issue in the post-Arrows Stars With Drapery format and a continuation of the branch mint's strong production stretch through the late 1850s. The Coinage Act of February 21, 1853 weight reduction to 2.49 grams remained in force, the dies carried no arrow flanks, and the Liberty obverse with drapery folds at the elbow continued the design that had governed New Orleans dime production since 1840. The 1,540,000 piece mintage made this one of the more substantial New Orleans dime years of the entire Seated Liberty design, sitting between the high-water 1854-O Arrows production and the more modest output levels that would return at the branch mint in 1858 and beyond.

Strike quality follows the typical New Orleans profile for the period. Liberty's head and the upper-left stars present unevenly across surviving examples, the shield's vertical lines can show weakness on later die states, and the reverse wreath bow often lacks crisp leaf detail. The O mintmark beneath the wreath bow varies in completeness of impression and can appear partial, soft, or filled on some die marriages. Authentication points are straightforward: clean date with no arrow flanks, a clearly formed O mintmark below the wreath bow, and the 2.49 gram post-Act weight on a scale. Removed-mintmark fakes from common Philadelphia 1857 dimes remain a theoretical concern on raw material, which is the usual reason to prefer certified examples for any New Orleans branch dime of the era.

Demand for the 1857-O is steady but unspectacular, coming primarily from date and mint specialists working a complete Seated dime set rather than from type collectors, who generally prefer the better-struck Philadelphia coinage for representative purposes. Circulated examples from Very Good through Extremely Fine are widely available at modest prices, About Uncirculated coins require only patience, and Mint State pieces are reasonably available through MS-62 before stepping up in price meaningfully at MS-63 and finer. Fully struck Mint State examples with sharp head and star detail are condition-rare and trade at premiums over typical Mint State coins.
