The 1864 Philadelphia dime is a Legend obverse issue struck during the fourth year of the Civil War, with a delivery of just 11,470 business strikes that ranks as the lowest Philadelphia dime mintage of the wartime stretch and one of the smallest figures of the entire Seated series. The collapse continues the pattern of 1863: with the federal government still operating under suspended specie payments, with greenbacks doing the work of daily currency, and with no domestic commercial demand for fresh silver dimes from a public that had hoarded its existing supply since late 1861, Philadelphia again barely produced the denomination at all. The 11,470-piece figure dips below the 14,460-piece 1863 by roughly 20 percent and sits in the same range as some of the lowest-mintage Carson City and New Orleans branch issues. Almost nothing from this striking entered ordinary American circulation; the bulk of the run moved from the Mint to Treasury vaults, to early collectors, or to brokers paying premiums for hard money over depreciating paper.

The minuscule business-strike mintage produces a distinctive survival pattern shared with the 1863. Mid-circulated examples (Good through Fine) are scarce because so few pieces ever saw heavy commercial use. Extremely Fine and About Uncirculated coins surface more frequently than the mintage would suggest, and Mint State examples exist in higher relative numbers than for adjacent wartime Philadelphia dates, a function of contemporary preservation of fresh-from-the-Mint coins by collectors and bullion dealers. PCGS and NGC population reports show meaningful certified survival across MS62 through MS64, though gem examples remain genuinely scarce. Authentication starts at the 2.49-gram weight, the 17.9-millimeter reeded edge, and the Legend obverse signature. Low-mintage Philadelphia silver dates of the Civil War years draw recurring counterfeit attention, and side-by-side photo comparison against documented genuine examples remains the standard verification step for any acquisition above mid-circulated condition.

For collectors, the 1864 reads as a true Semi-Key Civil War rarity with the same inverted grade-distribution profile as the 1863: better in Mint State than in mid-circulated condition, and a date where the chase for a problem-free About Uncirculated piece can outrun the chase for a clean MS63. Original-skin survivors command meaningful premiums across the certified grade range.
