About this coinHistory

Philadelphia struck just 14,000 dimes in 1879, a collapse of more than 99 percent from the 1.68-million 1878 figure and the entry point of the lowest-mintage stretch in the entire Seated dime series outside of the 1873-CC No Arrows apex rarity. The coin is a Legend, No Arrows issue under the 2.50-gram weight standard set by the Coinage Act of February 12, 1873. The 14,000-piece delivery reflects the combined effect of the Bland-Allison Act of February 28, 1878, which directed mint silver capacity toward the new high-volume Morgan dollar program, and a sharp drop in commercial demand for new dimes following the Carson City closure and the silver-dollar overproduction that absorbed branch capacity through the early 1880s. Philadelphia was effectively producing dimes for collectors and a token commercial allocation rather than for general circulation.

Survival reads counterintuitively given the mintage figure. Because contemporary collectors and bankers recognized the small delivery and saved Mint State examples in deliberate quantity, the certified population is concentrated in About Uncirculated and Mint State rather than the worn grades that typically dominate Seated dime survival distributions. PCGS, the Professional Coin Grading Service, and NGC, the Numismatic Guaranty Company, populations show meaningful gem MS-65 and MS-66 numbers for a date with this mintage. Circulated examples are genuinely scarce in any grade and command premiums comparable to or above contemporary Mint State pieces in some grade-band comparisons, which is the inverse of the usual Seated dime pricing curve. Strike quality on surviving Mint State examples runs sharp, with full shield rivets and crisp wreath leaves typical of the carefully-prepared dies used on these limited deliveries. Authentication starts at the 2.50-gram weight, the 17.9-millimeter reeded edge, and verification of date numeral style against documented references; counterfeit risk is low for an issue of this collector-saved profile.

For collectors, the 1879 is a Semi-Key driven by date rarity in lower grades and easy availability at the top of the population pyramid. Buying advice runs counter to instinct: well-struck Mint State pieces are routinely available, and the difficult acquisition is a problem-free Very Fine or Extremely Fine for a circulated set.
