About this coinHistory

At 43,690 pieces, the 1885-S is the lowest-mintage S-mint Seated Liberty Dime of the entire 36-year San Francisco dime run, and the headline rarity of the three S-mint Keys (1884-S, 1885-S, 1886-S) that close the series. The figure sits roughly an order of magnitude below the parallel 1884-S delivery of 564,969 and well below the 206,524-piece 1886-S that follows, placing the issue in genuine low-mintage territory rather than the condition-driven rarity tier that defines its bookend Keys. Philadelphia struck 2,533,427 dimes the same year for routine commercial supply; San Francisco's tiny output reflects a working-stock contraction on the West Coast that simply did not require a meaningful branch run. The coin is a Legend, No Arrows issue under the 1873 weight standard of 2.50 grams, with the S mintmark sitting inside the wreath on the reverse, below the bow, in the standard placement used for branch dimes throughout the post-1856 San Francisco program.

Strike quality on the issue is acceptable to above-average for a branch-mint coin of the period, with most certified examples showing reasonable central detail and clean wreath veining. The genuine collecting reality, however, is severe condition rarity layered on top of low absolute survival. The mintage was small to begin with, and most pieces went into hard West Coast circulation, so Good through Fine examples are the dominant surviving tier, Very Fine and Extremely Fine pieces are scarce, About Uncirculated coins are rare, and Mint State examples approach apex condition rarity for the closing-decade San Francisco run. PCGS, the Professional Coin Grading Service, and NGC, the Numismatic Guaranty Company, population reports thin out sharply above mid-circulated grades; gem Mint State examples surface at major auctions infrequently and command significant premiums when they do. Counterfeits exist, with the standard alteration being an S mintmark added to a Philadelphia 1885 to capture the substantial S-mint premium. Certification by a major grading service is the working standard for any purchase, with weight (2.50 grams) and reeded edge as supporting authentication steps.

For collectors, the 1885-S is the most-difficult-to-find S-mint Seated dime by mintage and one of the four toughest non-CC issues of the entire series, sitting alongside the 1884-S, 1886-S, and the 1860-O for difficulty in worn grades. The Key Date classification reflects the combination of low mintage, heavy circulation losses, and steady set-completion demand. The realistic acquisition path runs through certified Good through Fine pieces for most collectors, with Very Fine and above reserved for buyers with both the budget and the patience to wait for a quality offering.
