About this coinHistory

The 1900-O O/CC Over-Mintmark is the famous variety where an O mintmark was punched over an existing CC mintmark on reverse dies that had been originally prepared for Carson City before the Western mint closed silver-dollar operations after the 1893-CC final year. Treasury salvaged the leftover CC-marked dies by partially effacing the CC and entering an O over it, then shipping the dies to New Orleans for use in the 1900-O production. The variety is catalogued by the Van Allen-Mallis attribution system with multiple VAM listings and appears on the Top 100 Morgan VAM register as one of the most-collected over-mintmark varieties in the Morgan series.

Authentication of an O/CC claim relies on examination of the mintmark under five to ten power magnification. The underlying CC protrudes through the O, visible as remnant curls flanking the O's central opening. The strongest VAM examples show clear CC elements both above and below the O, with PCGS, the Professional Coin Grading Service, and NGC attributing the variety in their slabs. Counterfeit O/CC examples exist; certified slabs are the standard purchase route at the price levels this variety commands. The over-mintmark is the only documented case of CC-die salvage in the post-1893 Morgan series.

The 1900-O O/CC Over-Mintmark is a popular series Variety pickup and one of the most-recognized over-mintmark varieties in U.S. coinage alongside the 1882-O O/S and 1942/41 Mercury dimes. Pricing trades at a substantial multiple of the standard 1900-O across all Mint State grades, with the gap widest at MS65 and above. Most certified examples grade MS62 to MS64; MS65 and above is genuinely scarce. Certified slabs from PCGS or NGC with the VAM attribution noted on the holder are the standard purchase route at any meaningful price level, since variety counterfeits and misattributions both circulate in the raw market. The Van Allen-Mallis attribution system catalogues every documented Morgan die marriage, and the Top 100 Morgan VAM register identifies the most-collected varieties for specialist collectors. For the broader over-mintmark variety context and the Carson City closure history that produced the leftover dies, see the Morgan Dollar series history.
