About this coinHistory

The 1903-S Micro S is a famous San Francisco mintmark variety where a small-S punch was used in place of the standard-size S on a small subset of 1903-S working dies. The variety is catalogued by the Van Allen-Mallis attribution system as VAM-2 and sits on the Top 100 Morgan VAM register as one of the most-collected mintmark-style varieties of the entire series. The Micro S is roughly half the size of the standard 1903-S mintmark and is the same punch that San Francisco had used on dime and quarter dies in earlier years, accidentally entered onto silver-dollar dies during 1903-S production.

Authentication of a Micro S claim turns on direct comparison of the S size against a standard 1903-S reference. Under five to ten power magnification, the Micro S reads as noticeably smaller and more squared at the corners than the standard mintmark, with the difference visible at a glance once the eye is calibrated against a known example. PCGS, the Professional Coin Grading Service, and NGC attribute the variety in their slabs. Counterfeit Micro S coins exist; certified slabs are the standard purchase route at the price levels this variety commands. The Micro S is one of the most-altered mintmark varieties in the Morgan series.

The 1903-S Micro S is a popular series Variety pickup that trades at a substantial multiple of the standard 1903-S across all Mint State grades, with the gap widest at MS63 and above where the combined variety scarcity and 1903-S condition-rarity issues compound. Most certified examples grade VF to MS62; MS63 and above is genuinely scarce. Certified slabs from PCGS or NGC with the VAM attribution noted on the holder are the standard purchase route at any meaningful price level, since variety counterfeits and misattributions both circulate in the raw market. The Van Allen-Mallis attribution system catalogues every documented Morgan die marriage, and the Top 100 Morgan VAM register identifies the most-collected varieties for specialist collectors. For the Top 100 Morgan VAM register and the broader mintmark-style variety context, see the Morgan Dollar series history.
