About this coinHistory

Denver struck the John Adams dollar in 2007 as the second design of the Presidential series, released May 17 about three months behind the Washington opener. Production fell to 112,140,000 pieces, off the Washington-D pace and consistent with the immediate cooldown that hit every Presidential design after the launch issue. The coin carries Joel Iskowitz's Adams portrait sculpted by Charles L. Vickers, with Don Everhart's Statue of Liberty reverse and the standard incused edge inscription giving the year, mintmark, motto, and E PLURIBUS UNUM. The Denver mintmark sits on the edge rather than the obverse, a layout choice that left bare margins on both faces and gave the series its uncluttered look.

Strike quality on the Denver Adams is generally clean, but the year's headline issue is the edge. The third pressing step that applied the edge lettering misfired at a measurable rate across all four 2007 designs, and Adams was no exception. Plain-edge Adams dollars exist, scarcer in circulation than the Washington Plain Edge or the Washington Edge Lettering Error that drew the original publicity, and worth checking the rim of any 2007 dollar pulled from change or a roll. Beyond the edge, watch for weak strikes through Adams's hair detail and on the torch flame of the reverse, both common in the early manganese-brass production. The brassy planchet also tones quickly to a tan or olive cast, and uncirculated rolls a few years out of the bag often look nothing like the bright yellow examples sold in 2007 Mint sets.

The 2007-D Adams trades as a common date in every grade up to Mint State 67, with population reports thinning sharply above that point as the manganese-brass alloy resists the high-end strike and surface combinations that registry collectors chase. For most buyers a roll-fresh example or a Mint set coin is the practical purchase; certified Mint State 68 examples carry a meaningful premium driven by registry demand rather than absolute scarcity. The plain-edge variety is the only piece of this issue with real upside, and one worth confirming through a third-party grader before paying error-coin money.
