About this coinHistory

The 2007-P George Washington is the inaugural Philadelphia issue of the Presidential Dollar series and the higher-mintage half of the launch pair, with 176,680,000 pieces struck against the 163,680,000 from Denver. Public release came February 15, 2007, the first design under the Presidential $1 Coin Act of 2005 and the start of a four-presidents-per-year rollout that ran through 2016, with a posthumous George H.W. Bush issue in 2020. Joseph Menna sculpted the Washington obverse; Don Everhart produced the Statue of Liberty reverse used across the entire series. Philadelphia's launch coincided with a Mint-led banking distribution push intended to seed circulation, though the broader experiment of getting Americans to actually use dollar coins fared no better than the Sacagawea attempt before it.

Production specifics matter on this issue more than the headline mintage suggests. The manganese-brass clad composition, layered over a pure copper core, is harder on dies than the cupronickel of older dollar coins, and central-device softness develops as die life extends. Look at Washington's hair above the ear and at the texture of Liberty's robe on the reverse, where lengthy die runs leave mushy detail. The 2007 launch also ran the famous third-pressing edge-lettering step that applied "$1," the year, the mintmark, IN GOD WE TRUST, E PLURIBUS UNUM, and thirteen stars to the rim. That step misfired on a portion of both Philadelphia and Denver 2007 production, creating the Plain Edge variety catalogued separately. On a normal 2007-P, the edge inscriptions should be present, fully formed, and oriented either upright or inverted; both orientations are correct and roughly equally common.

For collectors, the 2007-P is a common date that nearly anyone can put together raw at a small premium to face. The interest sits in the condition tail. PCGS and NGC populations thin sharply at MS67, and MS68 examples are genuine condition rarities given how heavy bag-handling damages this large-format coin in transit. Year-set and Presidential type-set builders absorb most of the demand, and inaugural-year status keeps the 2007-P slightly stronger than mid-series Philadelphia common dates. For program structure, the NIFC transition, and the full roster of designs, see the Presidential Dollar series history.
