About this coinHistory

The 2008-P James Monroe was the first Presidential Dollar of 2008, released February 14 and opening the second year of the four-per-annum program. Philadelphia struck 64,260,000 examples for circulation, the larger of the two business-strike mintages for the design and a noticeable step down from 2007 first-year output, when collector novelty pushed Washington well past 175 million across both mints. By the time Monroe arrived, the program had settled into a routine: launch ceremony, brief retail visibility, then a slow drift into bank vaults as public demand failed to keep pace with supply. The Statue of Liberty reverse by Don Everhart and the Monroe portrait by Joseph Menna appeared here in their first year of release.

What collectors look at on a 2008-P is mostly the edge. Edge lettering is applied as a third strike after the obverse and reverse impressions, and the orientation is random, so each coin reads either right-side-up or upside-down relative to the obverse with roughly equal frequency. Neither orientation carries a premium. Doubled or partial edge lettering does, and it shows up sporadically across 2008 issues at far lower rates than the famous 2007 plain-edge errors. Strike quality on Monroe is generally clean: the high points of his hair behind the ear and the drapery folds on the Statue of Liberty are the spots to check for the soft definition that characterizes weakly struck examples. Spotting and fingerprint toning on uncirculated rolls are the most common condition issues.

As a collecting target the 2008-P is a year-set or type-set coin rather than a key. The realistic acquisition path is an original Mint bag or roll, which still trades at modest premiums to face value, or a certified MS66 or MS67 example for a registry slot. Population reports show plenty of MS66 coins and a meaningful tail into MS67, with MS68 examples becoming genuinely scarce. None of that translates to strong secondary-market pricing, since the mintage is high and circulated examples are worth a dollar.
