About this coinHistory
James Buchanan entered the presidency in 1857 as the nation fractured over slavery and proved unable to prevent the slide toward civil war. Buchanan is the only president who never married, and his niece Harriet Lane served as White House hostess. Philadelphia struck 36,820,000 Buchanan dollars in 2010. The Dred Scott decision, issued two days after his inauguration, defined his troubled single term. The 2010-P is common in Mint State.
