Philadelphia struck 36,820,000 James Buchanan dollars in 2010, narrowly outpacing the Denver figure for the same design and matching the slow-walk pattern the Mint applied to all four 2010 Presidential issues. The release date was August 19, 2010, paired with the Franklin Pierce dollar in a single launch ceremony. Buchanan was the only bachelor president and the only chief executive born in Pennsylvania, with his niece Harriet Lane serving as White House hostess. He had served as Secretary of State under Polk and as minister to Russia and Britain before his single term, which closed with seven southern states already seceded. Phebe Hemphill modeled the obverse portrait, paired with Don Everhart's Statue of Liberty reverse used across the entire business-strike series. The P mintmark is incused on the edge alongside the date and mottoes.

Strike on the 2010-P Buchanan obverse is generally clean, with the high forehead and coat lapel the first areas to soften when dies wear late in a press run. Reverse strike weakness on the torch flame and Liberty's gown shows at roughly the same rate as on the other 2010 Philadelphia issues. Edge orientation is not a variety: a finished Presidential Dollar can show the edge legend reading either direction relative to the obverse because the edge-lettering press strikes after die alignment is set, and either orientation is correct. The cherry-picking targets are missing edge lettering, far less common than on the 2007 Washington dollar but still authentic when slabbed, and doubled edge lettering struck twice by the third press. Major-grader certification is the only safe acquisition path for any edge anomaly.

The 2010-P Buchanan is a common coin in any circulated grade and inexpensive through Mint State 66, with population reports thinning sharply at MS67 and above where strike sharpness on the central obverse becomes the limiting factor. Most collectors satisfy the slot through original Mint-wrapped rolls or the four-coin 2010 Presidential Dollar set rather than buying slabbed singles, and certified high-grade pieces appeal mainly to registry builders chasing the 2010 quartet.
