About this coinHistory

Denver struck 3,780,000 Calvin Coolidge dollars in 2014, the second 2014 release in the Presidential Dollar program after the February 6 Warren G. Harding launch and the Coolidge ceremony of April 10, 2014 in Plymouth Notch, Vermont. The Denver figure sits in the typical NIFC-era range and matches the 2014-D Harding and 2014-D Hoover totals (both 3,780,000) before stepping up to 3,920,000 for 2014-D Franklin D. Roosevelt. Coolidge took office under unique circumstances on August 3, 1923 after President Harding died of a heart attack in San Francisco; Coolidge was visiting his family farmhouse in Plymouth Notch when word arrived, and his father, a Vermont notary public, administered the oath by kerosene-lamp light at 2:47 a.m. The portrait of the 30th president by Don Everhart pairs with Everhart's Statue of Liberty reverse used across the entire program.

Strike quality on the Denver Coolidge runs strong because lower NIFC-era output keeps die rotation aggressive and detail crisp on the high points of the brow and hair. Watch the alloy: manganese-brass tones aggressively to honey, olive, or rose within a year or two of striking, and bright lemon-yellow surfaces on a coin a decade out of the Mint almost always indicate cleaning. Bag and roll handling marks transferred from adjacent coins inside Mint-wrapped rolls are the dominant grade-limiter at MS66 and above, especially across the open field on Coolidge's cheek. The D mintmark sits on the edge alongside the date and the legends E PLURIBUS UNUM and IN GOD WE TRUST, applied in a third strike after the dies impress the faces.

The 2014-D Coolidge sold to collectors only through 25-coin rolls, 250-coin boxes, and the annual Mint Set; none reached commercial banks. Original Mint-wrapped rolls and uncut bags remain the most efficient acquisition path for collectors building a year-set or a 30th-president slot, and certified MS67 examples often cost less than searching multiple rolls for a single upper-end coin.
