About this coinHistory

The 2000-D Denver issue carried half the launch volume of a brand-new dollar coin into circulation, with 518,916,000 pieces struck across the inaugural year. Combined with Philadelphia's 767 million, the Mint pushed more than 1.28 billion Sacagawea dollars into the channel before the public's appetite for the new design had been tested. The manganese-brass clad composition was new for circulating U.S. coinage, and the gold-toned finish was the design feature most often cited in the press at launch. Glenna Goodacre's obverse, paired with Thomas D. Rogers Sr.'s Soaring Eagle reverse, replaced the discontinued Susan B. Anthony program that had foundered through the 1980s and 1990s.

For a Denver issue this large, strike quality is the only meaningful filter. The 2000-D commonly shows the soft tail-feather detail on the eagle that is typical of early Sacagawea production from both mints. PCGS and NGC, the two major third-party grading services, have certified the date heavily in MS65 through MS67, and pop reports thin out only at MS68 and above. The condition-rare tier is a long way from the working collector range; a circulated 2000-D rarely justifies a premium over face. Original Mint-sewn bags and rolls remain available on the secondary market at modest premiums, and the 2000-D is a date where buying a sealed roll for grading speculation still happens.

In the broader collecting landscape this is a common date, struck heavily and saved heavily, with no widely tracked variety on the Denver issue specifically (the famous Cheerios Reverse and Wounded Eagle are both Philadelphia varieties). It is the natural starting point for a Sacagawea date set: an inexpensive, high-grade entry that anchors the year-2000 inaugural slot. For the wider context of the program's launch and the Anthony-replacement decision, see the Sacagawea Dollar series history.
