About this coinHistory

The 2000-P Wounded Eagle is a die-state variety from the inaugural Philadelphia run, named for the curved raised line that crosses the eagle's belly on the reverse and looks, at glance, like a wound or spear. The cause was a damaged reverse die, with foreign material producing a deep gouge that transferred to every coin struck from that die before it was pulled. Multiple dies appear to have carried similar gouges across the eagle's chest area, which is why the variety is not the product of a single die-pair and why the surviving population is larger than a typical late-discovery error. The variety was identified shortly after the launch and has been recognized by both PCGS and NGC, the Professional Coin Grading Service and Numismatic Guaranty Company, the two major U.S. third-party grading services.

Authentication is straightforward by the standards of Sacagawea varieties. The diagnostic raised line runs across the eagle's chest with a curved trajectory, and its profile is consistent enough across slabbed examples that PCGS reference photos make the call easy. Counterfeiting risk is low because the variety trades at modest premiums; the more common problem is contact marks or post-strike damage on a standard reverse being misread as the gouge by an inexperienced eye. A clean attribution from PCGS or NGC settles the question. Strike quality is typical for the 2000-P run, and most certified examples grade MS64 to MS66 from rolls that were searched after the variety became known.

In the collecting hierarchy of 2000 Sacagawea varieties, the Wounded Eagle is the accessible one. Slabbed examples in MS65 and MS66 trade in the low to mid three-figure range, which puts the variety within reach of collectors who can never realistically chase the Cheerios Reverse or the 22kt Gold West Point. It rounds out the trio of Philadelphia 2000 die varieties and earns a specific date-set slot in any specialist run. For the broader launch context, see the Sacagawea Dollar series history.
