About this coinHistory

San Francisco struck 3,082,483 proof Sacagawea dollars in 2000, the first proof issue of the new program and the first U.S. dollar proof since the Susan B. Anthony was retired in 1999. The coin was sold both inside the standard 10-piece annual proof set and as a stand-alone Sacagawea dollar proof set, which gave collectors who had no interest in the cents-through-half-dollar lineup a direct route to the new design. Glenna Goodacre's obverse and Thomas D. Rogers Sr.'s Soaring Eagle reverse were rendered with the deep mirror fields and frosted devices that are standard for modern San Francisco proofs, and the manganese-brass clad composition gave the coin a different visual character from the traditional silver and clad proofs that surrounded it in the set.

For collectors, the 2000-S is a Cameo and Deep Cameo proof, with strong contrast between mirrored fields and frosted devices. PCGS and NGC pop reports show heavy certification at PR69 Deep Cameo, with PR70 Deep Cameo populations meaningful but not common. The strike is consistently sharp; tail-feather detail on the eagle is the diagnostic that the upper-tier grade hinges on, and milky toning or fingerprints from cracked-out raw examples are the more common deductions than strike weakness. No major varieties have been documented for the 2000-S, and the Cheerios and Wounded Eagle reverses are circulation-strike phenomena that do not appear on the proof issue.

This is a regular-issue proof, common in the absolute and easy to acquire in PR69 Deep Cameo at modest premiums above the modern proof floor. The collecting interest sits in the date's status as the inaugural Sacagawea proof rather than in any particular rarity. A complete year-2000 type set typically pairs the 2000-S with the 2000-P circulation strike to mark the launch. For the wider program history, see the Sacagawea Dollar series history.
