About this coinHistory

San Francisco struck 3,184,606 proof Sacagawea dollars in 2001, distributed in the standard ten-coin proof set and in the smaller Sacagawea-only proof packaging the Mint sold separately that year. The figure sits within a few thousand pieces of the 2000-S proof, suggesting that proof-set subscribers held steady even as the Federal Reserve was scaling back circulation orders for Philadelphia and Denver. The proof carries Glenna Goodacre's Sacagawea obverse and Thomas D. Rogers Sr.'s soaring eagle reverse, identical in design to the business-strike issue but treated with multiple polished-die strikes that give the relief a frosted, satin-textured finish against deeply mirrored fields.

This is a Cameo issue by default, where Cameo refers to the strong contrast between the mirrored fields and the frosted devices. PCGS, the Professional Coin Grading Service, and NGC, the Numismatic Guaranty Company, both designate the higher tier as Deep Cameo or Ultra Cameo, and 2001-S proofs cross those thresholds routinely; the difference between an ordinary Proof 69 and a Deep Cameo Proof 69 is meaningful for proof-set registry collectors but cosmetic for almost everyone else. The most common condition issue is haze, the milky film that develops on manganese-brass when the original Mint capsule traps moisture; lightly hazed examples grade lower than crisp ones even when the strike itself is full. Check the eagle's belly and the lettering on the reverse for any disturbance to the mirror, since these are where buyers spot problems first.

For collectors the 2001-S is a Regular classification proof, common in absolute terms but a required slot for Sacagawea proof-set builders working a complete run from 2000 forward. Loose proofs in their original capsules trade for modest premiums; certified Proof 70 Deep Cameo examples carry a real price step but supply is generous and competition is mostly registry-driven. The realistic acquisition path is an original 2001 proof set from a coin show or auction, broken or intact, rather than a slabbed single. For background on the program's launch, the design competition, and the 2009 transition to annually rotating Native American reverses, see the Sacagawea Dollar series history.
