San Francisco struck 2,179,867 proof Sacagawea dollars in 2009, the first proof issue under the annually rotating Native American reverse mandated by the Native American $1 Coin Act of 2007. The reverse, designed by Norman E. Nemeth and sculpted by Charles L. Vickers, depicts the hands of a Native American woman planting corn, beans, and squash, the Three Sisters companion planting tradition shared across many Northeastern Woodland and Southeastern nations. Goodacre's Sacagawea portrait carries over from 2000 on the obverse, and the 2009 redesign moved the date and E PLURIBUS UNUM to incused edge lettering for the first time. The proof was distributed in the standard 2009 Proof Set, the Silver Proof Set, and the dedicated Native American $1 Coin Proof Set issued by the Mint that year.
The expectation on a 2009-S is Deep Cameo, called Ultra Cameo by the Numismatic Guaranty Company; that is the strong contrast between mirrored fields and frosted devices that San Francisco's selectively pickled dies produce on modern proof manganese-brass dollars. Anything less should be examined for handling impairment or a worn die state late in the run. The Three Sisters reverse is particularly suited to the format because the recessed seed and foliage detail Vickers cut into the fields catches frost cleanly, while the surrounding mirrors set off the central composition. Watch for hairlining from album mishandling and for the small carbon spots that occasionally appear on brass-clad proofs, especially near the edge lettering. No major proof varieties have been documented for this issue.
The 2009-S is a Regular classification piece, with rarity context conveyed by the proof mintage rather than by a key-date badge. PR69DCAM is the working population grade and trades at a small premium over the original proof set; PR70DCAM is the genuine condition target and pulls a noticeably higher figure. For collectors building the proof side of the Native American series, the 2009-S is the program-opening entry and pairs with the 2009-P and 2009-D to anchor the first year of the new annual reverse format. For the 2000 launch and the policy arc that produced the 2009 redesign, see the Sacagawea Dollar series history.
