Denver struck 18,313 Enhanced Finish 2014 Sacagawea dollars, the lowest mintage of any 2014 Native Hospitality issue and one of the lowest figures anywhere in the post-2011 NIFC era of the program. These pieces were distributed exclusively in the 2014 American $1 Coin and Currency Set, a special U.S. Mint product that paired the Enhanced Finish dollar with a Series 2013 $1 Federal Reserve Note bearing a serial number printed on uncut sheet stock from the Bureau of Engraving and Printing. The 2014 reverse, designed by Chris Costello and sculpted by Joseph F. Menna, depicts a Native American man offering a ceremonial peace pipe to a non-Native figure, with NATIVE HOSPITALITY identifying the program theme. Glenna Goodacre's Sacagawea portrait remains on the obverse, with date, D mintmark, and E PLURIBUS UNUM on the incused edge.
The Enhanced Finish process uses laser frosting to selectively raise the contrast between the device fields and the satin-textured high points, producing a finish visually distinct from both standard business strikes and traditional cameo proofs. Authentication is the central concern at this date and mintmark: a regular 2014-D circulation strike and a 2014-D Enhanced Finish piece bear the same D mintmark, so the difference between a face-value piece and a multi-hundred-dollar collectible comes down to surface treatment rather than die marriage. Original Mint-sealed Coin and Currency Set packaging is the simplest provenance, and certified holders from the Professional Coin Grading Service or the Numismatic Guaranty Company are the only reliable confirmation for raw examples broken out of their original folders.
The 2014-D Enhanced Finish is the rarest 2014 issue and the headline collectible of the year. The 18,313 mintage stands well below the next-rarest 2014 figure (the 1,243,228 San Francisco proof) and below most special-set issues across the post-2009 reverse rotation. Both certification services show populations consistent with a small fraction of the 18,313 distribution actually submitted for grading, with SP69 the realistic registry target and SP70 thinning out toward condition rarity. Original sealed Coin and Currency Sets at the time of release remain the most efficient acquisition path. For the Native American $1 Coin Act of 2007 and the special-set issue framework, see the Sacagawea Dollar series history.
