About this coinHistory

Denver's 3,080,000-piece run is the third year of Sacagawea dollar production after the December 2011 Not Intended For Circulation (NIFC) policy shift, which means none of these coins were ever shipped to Federal Reserve Banks for ordinary commerce. They left Denver in Mint-sealed bags and rolls and entered the market only through direct U.S. Mint sales. The 2014 reverse, designed by Chris Costello and sculpted by Joseph F. Menna, depicts a Native American man offering a ceremonial peace pipe to a non-Native counterpart. The theme honors the hospitality extended by indigenous peoples to early European explorers and settlers, with specific reference to the role Sacagawea and her Lemhi Shoshone, Mandan, and Nez Perce kin played in the success of the 1804 to 1806 Lewis and Clark expedition. Glenna Goodacre's Sacagawea portrait remains on the obverse, with date, D mintmark, and E PLURIBUS UNUM on the incused edge lettering used since the 2009 redesign.

Strike sharpness on the central reverse pipe and the offered hand is the routine inspection point on the 2014-D, since the manganese-brass alloy moves softly into the dies and high points flatten when die life pushes past the optimum. Bag-handling marks on the open obverse cheek are the standard condition cap on raw NIFC pieces. Counterfeiting is not a concern at this mintage and date, but altered-finish fraud is: a regular 2014-D circulation strike and a 2014-D Enhanced Finish piece look superficially similar, and certified holders are the only reliable way to confirm the Enhanced Finish premium.

The 2014-D is a Regular classification piece. Population reports at the Professional Coin Grading Service and the Numismatic Guaranty Company show MS66 supply abundant, MS67 reachable at modest premium, and MS68 the realistic ceiling rather than a true rarity. The most efficient acquisition path is original Mint-direct rolls or bags, which supply the bag-fresh surfaces required for high-grade certification. Certified single coins above MS67 are where collector interest concentrates. For the Native American $1 Coin Act of 2007 and the December 2011 NIFC transition, see the Sacagawea Dollar series history.
