The 2019-S American Indians in Space proof is the standard San Francisco mirror-finish entry for the year and the only one of the four 2019 Native American dollars produced as a true cameo proof. The reverse, designed by Emily Damstra and sculpted by Joseph F. Menna, honors Native contributions to the United States space program through two named figures: Mary Golda Ross, of the Cherokee Nation, the Lockheed Skunk Works engineer who worked on the Agena upper stage and on early concepts that fed Apollo, and John Herrington, of the Chickasaw Nation, who flew aboard STS-113 Endeavour in November 2002 as the first enrolled member of a federally recognized tribe to reach space. The design depicts Ross writing equations beside an astronaut spacewalking with Earth visible. The 1,197,217 mintage was sold through the regular United States Mint Proof Set, the Silver Proof Set, and the dedicated Native American $1 Coin Proof Set product.
What collectors look for on the 2019-S concentrates on cameo contrast and surface integrity rather than die-state diagnostics of the kind that drive earlier-era proof analysis. PCGS and NGC certified populations cluster firmly at PR69 DCAM and PR70 DCAM. DCAM, Deep Cameo, is the third-party grading designation for the strongest contrast between mirrored fields and frosted devices; for modern San Francisco proofs the designation is essentially universal, and the absence of a DCAM tag on a slab from this issue is a flag rather than a feature. Authentication concerns are minimal, and no doubled-die or doubled-design varieties have been published for the issue.
Inside the collecting landscape today, the 2019-S is a routine modern San Francisco proof whose appeal lives in the design rather than the mintage figure. The 1,197,217 production places it mid-range across the 2009-onward proof Sacagawea run, between the higher 2009-2011 figures and the falling 2020-onward numbers. Registry-set builders working the program need the date, and raw examples broken from Mint Sets remain readily available at modest premiums. Certified PR69 DCAM trades for low single digits over the issue price, with PR70 DCAM carrying the modern perfect-grade premium typical of any current San Francisco proof. For the program's finish-family structure and the wider Native American Dollar context, see the Sacagawea Dollar series history.
