About this coinHistory

Philadelphia's 1,400,000-piece run matches Denver's mintage and is the eleventh year of Not Intended For Circulation production, the Mint-set-and-bag distribution policy in force across the annual reverse program since 2012. The reverse, designed by Donna Weaver and sculpted by Joseph F. Menna, shows Ely Samuel Parker (1828 to 1895), known among the Tonawanda Band of Seneca as Hasanoanda and later as the sachem Donehogawa, seated and inscribing the surrender document at Appomattox Court House on April 9, 1865. Inscriptions read ELY S. PARKER, HA-SA-NO-AN-DA, DONEHOGAWA, and SENECA SACHEM, anchored by UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and $1. Parker trained as a civil engineer and read law before the war, joined Grant's staff at Vicksburg, and rose to military secretary in time to draft the Appomattox terms in his own handwriting on the parlor table at the McLean House. President Grant later appointed him the first Native American Commissioner of Indian Affairs, where he served from 1869 to 1871. Glenna Goodacre's Sacagawea portrait remains on the obverse with edge lettering carrying date, P mintmark, and E PLURIBUS UNUM.

Strike characteristics on a fresh-die 2022-P are clean, with the surrender-scroll cross-hatching and the seated figure's coat folds rendering well; late-die-state coins flatten the scroll edges and the facial relief first. Bag-marks on the open obverse cheek and forehead are the routine condition cap on this NIFC-era issue, since the Philadelphia output ships in Mint-sealed rolls and bags rather than circulating through commercial channels. Brass-clad alloy is softer than copper-nickel, so fingerprint deposits and storage spotting on roll-pulled examples are worth checking before submission.

The 2022-P is a Regular classification piece. Certified populations at the Professional Coin Grading Service and Numismatic Guaranty Company show abundant MS66 and ready MS67 supply, with MS68 the practical upgrade ceiling rather than a true rarity. Original Mint-sealed twenty-five-coin rolls remain the most efficient acquisition path for raw collectors, while certified MS67 examples trade at premiums tied to slab and label more than to scarcity. The 1,400,000 figure sits squarely in the program's 2020-onward 1.1 to 1.5 million NIFC band. For the Native American $1 Coin Act of 2007, the 2012 NIFC transition, and the rotating-reverse program structure, see the Sacagawea Dollar series history.
