About this coinHistory

San Francisco's 2023 Maria Tallchief proof gives the design its highest-fidelity treatment of the year. Tallchief, an Osage woman born in Fairfax, Oklahoma in 1925, became the first American to be a major prima ballerina; she joined Balanchine in Paris in 1947 when he guest-choreographed for the Paris Opera Ballet, opened the New York City Ballet as its first prima ballerina in 1948, originated his "Firebird" in 1949, and danced the Sugar Plum Fairy in his reworked "Nutcracker" in 1954. The reverse, designed by Ben Sowards and sculpted by Phebe Hemphill, places Tallchief mid-pose with four ballerinas in shadow behind her for the rest of the Five Moons, with a lunar motif in the right field and the inscriptions MARIA TALLCHIEF and AMERICAN INDIANS IN BALLET around the rim. The proof finish lifts the small background figures and the textured tutu in a way the business strike cannot, since the struck-twice planchet and polished dies bring detail forward across both the foreground pose and the shadowed ballerinas behind it.

What collectors look for on this proof is uniformity of finish across a relatively complex composition and the depth of cameo contrast. Cameo, the strong contrast between mirrored fields and frosted devices, is standard on modern San Francisco proofs; Deep Cameo (PCGS) or Ultra Cameo (NGC) designations track the heaviest frost on the central elements. PR69 and PR70 dominate certified populations because the coin shipped sealed inside the 2023 Proof Set and the dedicated Native American $1 Coin Proof Set. The 829,526 mintage covers all proof products containing the Tallchief dollar combined. Counterfeits are not a working concern at this date.

Inside the collecting landscape today, the 2023-S is a common modern proof whose role is set completion rather than rarity acquisition. PR69 Deep Cameo examples trade in the low single digits and PR70 examples carry the typical perfect-grade premium. The 829,526 figure sits below the seven-figure baseline that ran through the early 2010s, putting the issue at the lower end of the modern proof range without making it scarce in absolute terms. For the program's reverse-rotation framework and the wider Native American series context, see the Sacagawea Dollar series history.
