About this coinHistory

The 1860-O Seated Liberty Dollar is the fourth and final New Orleans Seated Dollar issue at 515,000 pieces, the largest New Orleans Seated Dollar mintage of the series and the closing year of O-mint Seated Dollar production before the Civil War halted operations at New Orleans. The 1860-O carries the standard Christian Gobrecht obverse and the No Motto reverse that defines the series through 1865, with the O mintmark positioned below the eagle on the reverse. New Orleans struck Seated Dollars in only four years total (1846, 1850, 1859, 1860), and the 1860-O closes the entire O-mint Seated Dollar production permanently.

Strike quality on the 1860-O is generally average for a New Orleans Seated Dollar issue, with some examples showing soft central definition typical of New Orleans Seated Dollar production. Liberty's head and the eagle's central feathers come up cleanly on most early-die-state coins. Most surviving 1860-O Seated Dollars grade VF to AU from circulation, with PCGS, the Professional Coin Grading Service, and NGC populations clustering at VF and EF. Mint State examples are scarce above MS62 but available because of documented bag-quantity releases from Treasury holdings in the late-1850s and early-1860s redemption period that distributed both 1859-O and 1860-O issues.

The 1860-O is a regular common date for the New Orleans Seated Dollar subset and one of the more accessible O-mint Seated Dollars at mid-grade alongside the 1859-O. Pricing trades at modest premiums above Philadelphia Seated Dollars of the same year at most grades. The 1860-O pairs with the 1846-O, 1850-O, and 1859-O as the complete four-year New Orleans Seated Dollar subset, with the 1860-O closing the O-mint Seated Dollar series before the Civil War halted New Orleans operations. Authentication concerns center on cleaning, polishing, and rim damage from circulation; certified slabs from PCGS or NGC are the standard purchase route at higher grades. For the New Orleans Mint Seated Dollar history and the broader pre-Civil War silver economics arc, see the Seated Liberty Dollar series history.
