The 1866 With Motto Seated Liberty Dollar opens the Type 2 reverse era of the series, with 49,625 pieces struck at the Philadelphia Mint as the first regular issue carrying "IN GOD WE TRUST" on the reverse. The motto addition was authorized by the Act of March 3, 1865 (which followed the April 22, 1864 act that authorized the motto for other denominations) and became the standard Seated Dollar reverse from 1866 through the series end in 1873. The motto appears on a banner above the eagle, with the surrounding design elements adjusted to accommodate the new inscription.
Strike quality on the 1866 Motto is generally above average for the date, with Liberty's head, the seated figure's drapery, and the eagle's central feathers coming up cleanly on most early-die-state coins. Most surviving 1866 Motto Seated Dollars grade VF to AU from circulation in the late 1860s, with PCGS, the Professional Coin Grading Service, and NGC populations clustering at EF and AU. Mint State examples are scarce above MS62 and condition rare at MS65 and above. The 1866 Motto carries collector significance as the first-year Type 2 reverse pickup and is widely collected as part of the matched 1865 No Motto / 1866 Motto type-transition pair.
The 1866 Motto is a regular common date for the Type 2 Seated Dollar era and a fundamental first-year-of-type pickup for any complete Seated Dollar set. Pricing trades at modest premiums above the more common 1867-1869 Philadelphia issues at most grades, supported by first-year-of-type demand. The 1866 Motto pairs with the 1865 No Motto as the matched type-transition pair, and with the 1867 and 1868 as the early Motto-era Philadelphia trio. The unique 1866 No Motto Proof is a separately catalogued entry. Authentication concerns center on cleaning, polishing, and rim damage from circulation; certified slabs from PCGS or NGC are the standard purchase route at higher grades. For the motto-addition history and the broader 1860s Seated Dollar arc, see the Seated Liberty Dollar series history.
