About this coinHistory

The 1818 5D over 50 half eagle preserves a small but unmistakable mistake from the early Philadelphia Mint. When this reverse die was prepared, the worker reached for the wrong denomination punch and stamped the numerals "50" into the field below the eagle, the same numeral pair used on the contemporary half dollar reverse. The error was caught before the die went into service. A second pass with the correct punch produced the proper "5 D." denomination, but the underlying digits were never fully effaced. Traces of the original 0 remain visible behind and beneath the corrected legend, and the spacing of the final 5 D. sits slightly off because the engraver worked around the earlier impression. Bass and Dannreuther catalog this die as BD-1 of the 1818 5D over 50 marriage.

Attribution turns on the reverse field directly below the eagle's tail feathers. A genuine 5D over 50 shows the curved remnant of the 0 protruding behind and below the D, with subtle traces of the original numeral layout under the corrected legend. The host coin must hit the federal weight standard of 8.75 grams at 0.9167 fineness, with a diameter near 25.0 millimeters and a fully reeded edge. Examination should be done at 10x or higher magnification on a coin grading Fine or better, since heavy wear can soften the underlying punch traces. Any specimen offered raw or with weak diagnostics deserves third-party authentication, because added-numeral fakes have surfaced in this market.

Modern collectors treat the 5D over 50 as a desirable companion to the standard 1818 issue and to the 1819 5D over 50, which shares the same punch story one year later. Survival is estimated at roughly 50 to 100 examples across all grades, with most pieces falling in the Very Fine to Extremely Fine range and certified Mint State coins very scarce. The variety carries a meaningful premium over a normal 1818 half eagle and appeals to early gold specialists and to error collectors drawn to the human side of the early Mint.
