The 1820 Capped Bust Half Eagle from the Philadelphia Mint reached a combined production of 263,806 pieces, a respectable figure for the early gold series. Mint engravers used several date and lettering punches that year, and surviving coins divide into three cataloged variety pairings that collectors track separately. The first is the Curl Base 2 with Large Letters on the reverse, the version featured on this page. The second pairs the Curl Base 2 with Small Letters, and the third is the Square Base 2, which uses a flat-bottomed numeral instead of the curled form. All three left the Mint as legal tender and circulated together without distinction during the 1820s. Bass-Dannreuther catalogs the underlying die marriages for specialists, but these three pairings remain the entry point for variety-level collectors.
Identification of the Curl Base 2, Large Letters version starts with the date. The bottom of the 2 shows a small inward curl or serif rather than a flat horizontal base, a feature best confirmed under five-power magnification on coins grading Fine or better. The reverse legend then settles the attribution: the letters in UNITED STATES OF AMERICA appear noticeably bolder and taller than on the Small Letters reverse, with wider spacing between characters. Authenticators also weigh suspect pieces against the published 8.75 gram standard at 0.9167 fine, and they measure the diameter at roughly 25.0 millimeters. Reeded collars from this period produce evenly spaced reeds, and any coin showing a plain edge, low weight, or a fine seam along the rim should be set aside as a likely counterfeit.
Today the 1820 Curl Base 2, Large Letters trades as a recognized variety within an already scarce date. Survivor counts are modest in all grades. Circulated examples in Fine through Extremely Fine come to market most often, while About Uncirculated and Mint State pieces reach strong premiums when third-party graded by PCGS or NGC with the Large Letters attribution on the holder. Original surfaces, even gold color, and clear date and lettering detail drive auction results well above the bullion floor. Among specialists pursuing all three 1820 pairings, this one usually ranks in the middle for difficulty.
