About this coinHistory

The 1825/4/1 Capped Bust half eagle records one of the most extraordinary die histories in American gold coinage. The final digit in the date began life as a "1" on a die prepared in 1821, sunk but apparently never (or barely) used. When the Mint pulled the die back into service, an engraver punched a "4" over the original "1" to repurpose it for 1824 production. A year later, with bullion still scarce and serviceable dies still scarcer, the same die was hauled out again and the "4" was overpunched with a "5" for 1825 use. Cataloged as Bass-Dannreuther BD-2, the variety is one of just a handful of triple-punched dates in the entire federal series. Bass-Dannreuther record only two to three confirmed business strikes from this die marriage, placing it at the absolute summit of Capped Bust half eagle rarity and well beyond anything ordinarily described as a key date. Combined Mint output for the 1825 date amounted to roughly 29,060 pieces across both dies.

Authentication centers on the final digit of the date, where a careful look under strong magnification should reveal the curved lower loop of the underlying "4" inside and beneath the "5", and faint vertical traces of the original "1" tucked behind the lower right of the "5". Because the known population is so small, every genuine example carries a documented pedigree, and provenance through a major cabinet such as Eliasberg, Bass, or Pittman is itself a primary authenticity tool. Specifications match the rest of the Capped Head Left issue: 8.75 grams, about 25.0 millimeters in diameter, struck in 0.9167 fine gold alloyed with copper and silver, with a reeded edge. Any candidate coin should match those targets within strict tolerances, since added or recut date digits on a host coin of the wrong weight remain the principal counterfeit risk for early gold of this rarity.

For modern collectors the 1825/4/1 sits in a tier most series do not contain at all. With only two or three pieces accounted for, opportunities to acquire one occur perhaps once in a generation, and recent appearances at major auction have realized high six-figure to seven-figure prices. The variety is essentially uncollectible by purchase for all but a handful of advanced cabinets, but it remains the headline target for any serious student of the series and a benchmark for what early American die reuse could produce. For complete background on type design, mintmark history, and survival patterns across the issue, see the full Capped Bust Half Eagle series history.
