About this coinHistory

The 1833 production at Philadelphia totaled 193,630 half eagles, a healthy figure that placed the year among the stronger output dates within the reduced-diameter Capped Head Left format. Two die varieties carry that combined mintage: the Large Date logotype, which is the more frequently encountered of the pair, and the scarcer Small Date. No formal split between the two was ever documented. Most surviving 1833 half eagles fall into the Large Date column, suggesting that working obverses received the taller numeral logotype before Small Date dies entered service. Survival estimates from Bass-Dannreuther and PCGS for the Large Date hover in the range of 50 to 100 known examples across all grades, a tight population reflecting the heavy melting that consumed nearly the entire mintage during the gold-revaluation upheaval of 1834.

Variety attribution is settled at the date logotype itself. On the Large Date, the numerals stand noticeably taller and the bases of the digits sit closer to the bust truncation, with the 8 and the 3s carrying broader, more open loops. Specifications are uniform across both varieties and should be confirmed before any attribution work begins: 8.75 grams in weight, 23.8 millimeters in diameter, struck in 0.9167 fine gold with a reeded edge. The reduced 23.8mm planchet, introduced under the Kneass modifications, is itself a fast authentication checkpoint, since cast or transfer-die counterfeits of this issue often miss the diameter by a fraction of a millimeter. A digital caliper paired with a verified weight will dispatch most fakes before the date logotype even comes into question.

Modern collecting interest in the 1833 Large Date concentrates in the lightly circulated grades from VF through low AU, where original surfaces and honest wear command strong premiums over cleaned or repaired pieces. Mint State examples exist but are genuinely rare, and any uncirculated coin offered at a serious price should carry PCGS or NGC certification. CAC approval adds a meaningful layer of confidence on the originality question, which matters more here than on most contemporary issues because so few survivors escaped 1834 with their surfaces intact. Background on the issue's place in the broader run is covered in the Capped Bust Half Eagle series history.
