The 1836 proof half eagle was struck in very small numbers, estimated at fewer than 10 coins. The business strike mintage of 553,842 was one of the highest in the series, but proof production remained minimal, serving the tiny collector market of the mid-1830s. Surviving proofs are extremely rare. The proof provides the clearest view of the Classic Head design during one of its peak production years. The proof was struck from specially prepared dies on carefully selected planchets, producing mirrored fields and sharply defined devices. The care taken in proof production reveals details of the engraving that circulation strikes cannot match, including fine hair texture, individual feather definition, and precise lettering. Certification by PCGS or NGC is essential for establishing proof status and grade, as the distinction from a high-grade business strike requires expert surface analysis.
