About this coinHistory

The 1804 Draped Bust half eagle closed out a design that had carried American gold through the country's first decade of federal coinage, and the Philadelphia engraving department was still finishing dies by hand on the eve of that closing year. Robert Scot's Heraldic Eagle reverse paired with a Draped Bust obverse adapted from Gilbert Stuart's portrait of Ann Willing Bingham, and the year's combined production reached 30,475 coins distributed across every die marriage struck for the date. Within that umbrella sit two distinct date-digit families, separated by how the final numeral was sunk into the working die. On the Small 8 over Large 8 variant the engraver first drove a Large 8 punch into the soft die steel and then re-entered the digit using a Small 8 punch, leaving traces of the underlying numeral visible behind and beside the smaller logotype. Bass-Dannreuther treats this overpunched configuration as scarcer than the parallel Small 8 marriages and assigns it the thinner of the two surviving populations for the date.

Authentication of a Small 8 over Large 8 candidate begins under five-power to ten-power magnification trained directly on the final digit. A genuine example will show a Small 8 logotype with curved underdigit traces visible inside the loops or extending outward at the top and bottom curves, matched against the Bass-Dannreuther plate photographs at the same magnification. Specifications follow the long-running 1792 Coinage Act standard at 8.75 grams in 0.9167 fine gold near 25 millimeters across, with a reeded edge and rotated coin alignment, so weight and edge alone cannot separate the overpunched variety from a normal date. A Bass-Dannreuther die marriage attribution remains the single most defensible anchor on any raw piece.

For modern collectors the Small 8 over Large 8 occupies a Semi-Key position in the Draped Bust half eagle series, with Bass-Dannreuther estimating roughly two hundred to four hundred examples surviving in all grades. Certified pieces appear sparingly in major auctions, and provenance through the Bass, Pogue, or Eliasberg cabinets adds material weight at every grade band.
