About this coinHistory

The 1856 proof gold dollar marks the first proof issue of the Type 3 design. Longacre's enlarged Indian Princess head, developed to solve the striking problems of the Type 2, appears in full mirrored detail on the proof surfaces. The proof format shows the headdress feathers, hair texture, and wreath leaves with a crispness that circulation strikes rarely achieve. Proof gold dollars from the 1850s were produced in very small quantities, estimated at fewer than 50 coins, for direct sale to the small community of American numismatists.

Surviving examples are rare enough that each auction appearance is a significant event. Certification by PCGS or NGC is essential for confirming proof status, as the distinction between a proof and a high-grade business strike requires expert examination of surface characteristics. The 1856 proof gold dollar serves as the benchmark for the Type 3 proof series that would continue through 1889.
