The 1856 Upright 5 variety uses a date punch where the numeral 5 stands more vertically, distinguishing it from the standard Slanted 5 issue. The difference is visible under low magnification on coins in Fine or better condition. The two varieties represent different date punches used during the 1856 production run, a common occurrence at the Mint during this period when each die was prepared individually by hand.
Both varieties share the total 1856 Philadelphia mintage of 1,762,936 coins. The Upright 5 is scarcer and commands a modest premium over the Slanted 5 in most grades. PCGS and NGC attribute the variety on their holders. Collectors who pursue the Type 3 gold dollar by date and variety treat the two 1856 punch types as separate entries, while type collectors generally select whichever is available at a better price.
