About this coinHistory

Philadelphia struck 774,789 gold dollars in 1857, a substantial production that reflected continued demand for the denomination. The Panic of 1857 hit the country that August, triggered by the failure of the Ohio Life Insurance and Trust Company, but gold coin production at the Mint was largely insulated from the crisis. Gold maintained its value while paper currency and bank notes became suspect, and the gold dollar's role as a tangible store of value actually strengthened during the financial turmoil.

The 1857 Philadelphia is readily available in circulated grades. Uncirculated examples with original luster exist in sufficient numbers for collectors to be selective about surface quality. The coin is a standard issue in the early years of the Type 3 series, carrying no special premium beyond its gold content and the normal market price for the date.
