About this coinHistory

The 1858 proof gold dollar was produced in limited quantity for the collector market. Proof mintage estimates for this year range from 50 to 80 coins. The Panic of 1857 had contracted the economy, but the small community of proof-set collectors maintained their purchases, providing consistent demand for the Mint's annual proof offerings. Gold dollar proofs were sold directly from the Philadelphia Mint at a modest premium over face value.

Surviving 1858 proof gold dollars are scarce. The mirrored surfaces and sharp strike characteristic of proof production are present on well-preserved examples, though many have been cleaned or mishandled over the intervening 168 years. A problem-free proof with original surfaces in PR64 or better commands significant premiums at auction.
