About this coinHistory

San Francisco struck 10,000 gold dollars in 1858, the same figure as the previous year. The denomination held a minimal position in San Francisco's production priorities. The mint was focused on converting California's massive gold output into double eagles and eagles, denominations that moved far more bullion per coin. Gold dollars were essentially an afterthought, produced in small batches to maintain the denomination's presence in western commerce.

The 1858-S is scarce. PCGS estimates roughly 75 to 100 survive across all grades. Most grade between Fine and Extremely Fine, with Uncirculated examples genuinely difficult to locate. The coin carries interest both as a San Francisco issue and as a representative of the denomination's limited role in Gold Rush-era coinage. Strike quality is generally acceptable by branch mint standards.
