About this coinHistory

San Francisco delivered 15,000 gold dollars in 1859, a 50% increase over the previous two years' 10,000-coin runs. The higher output may reflect a temporary increase in demand for small gold coins in the California economy, or simply a larger batch of gold dollar planchets processed during the year's production schedule. The "S" mintmark on the reverse identifies the coin.

The 1859-S is one of the more available San Francisco gold dollars, though "available" remains relative for a coin with a 15,000-piece mintage. PCGS estimates roughly 100 to 150 survive across all grades. Circulated examples in Fine to Extremely Fine can be located with patience. Uncirculated coins are scarce, and gem examples are rare.
