About this coinHistory

The 1860 proof gold dollar was produced during the final months before the Civil War. South Carolina seceded in December, and the proof sets purchased that year were among the last acquired under normal peacetime conditions. Estimated proof mintage is 100 to 150 coins, as the growing collector community continued to support the Mint's proof program. The proof shows Longacre's Type 3 design in full detail, with mirrored fields contrasting against the frosted devices.

Surviving examples are scarce but somewhat more available than the earlier proof dates. The 1860 proof gold dollar is collected both as part of proof gold sets and individually by gold dollar specialists. Certification confirms the proof designation and grade.
